ravel 2023

cotton jaquard (found fabric - tablecloth)
250 x 350 x 70 cm

The word ravel is rarely used in english and means at the same time “to entangle, become entwined confusedly”and “to untangle, disentangle, unwind” I deconstruct a jacquard tablecloth, unweave it thread by tread in order to transform the patern on the fabric. Jacquard fabrics are produced on a machine loom, which was invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1804 and was one of the first machines programmed with a zero-one system. The structure of the fabric serves as a metaphor for a zero-one principle, effective, beautiful but rigid, very strictly exclusive. By taking the treads out I discover a different pattern, another way to interlace turning the surface of the fabric into a spatial object.
